NOTICE OF DATA INCIDENT
Holmes & Yates Law, P.L.L.C., d/b/a Holmes, Yates & Johnson Law Firm (“Holmes & Yates”) recently learned that an unauthorized third party gained access to one Holmes & Yates’ employee email account.
Upon learning of the incident, Holmes & Yates promptly secured the email account to prevent further access. Holmes & Yates also retained a leading forensic security firm to investigate and confirm the security of its email and computer systems. In addition, Holmes & Yates has taken steps to reduce the risk of this type of incident occurring in the future, including enhancing its technical security measures. Since an unknown individual had access to the accounts, Holmes & Yates searched the accounts for any personal information contained therein. Holmes & Yates recently determined the impacted account contained certain personal information.
On October 1, 2021, Holmes & Yates sent written notification to all potentially impacted individuals for whom it has contact information. For the individuals with Social Security numbers involved, Holmes & Yates has provided a complimentary membership for credit monitoring and identity protection services.
As a precautionary measure, impacted individuals should remain vigilant to protect against potential fraud and/or identity theft by, among other things, reviewing their account statements, monitoring their credit reports closely, and notifying their financial institutions if unusual activity is detected. They should also promptly report any fraudulent activity or suspected identity theft to proper law enforcement authorities, including the police and their state’s attorney general. Affected individuals may also wish to review the tips provided by the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) on fraud alerts, security/credit freezes and steps that they can take to avoid identity theft.
